Insurrection is a violent uprising against an authority or government. The historical insurrection that Brent is referring to in this chapter is white men were divided into companies of sixteen, each headed by a captain. Orders were given, and the wild scouts rushed in every direction, wherever a colored face was to be found. Troops would of search the colored people and slaves houses. The soldiers would rob things from slaves houses.

2).Who was Nat Turner and what happened to him?

Nat Turner was an rebellion and was taken he was suspected of insurrection. Nat was captured.

3).What were the slaves punishment if suspected of insurrection? Give examples from the text.

If the slaves were suspected of insurrection, every where men, women, and children were whipped till the blood stood in puddles at their feet. Some received five hundred lashes. others were tied hands and feet, and tortured with a bucking paddle, which blisters the skin terribly. page 70

correspondence among the slaves?

Whites were looking for written correspondence among the slaves because they were looking to see if slaves were writing out escape plans and for any communication to any slaves that are already escaped.

colored people." Why do you think this "poor fellow" would make up a story?

The poor fellow made up the story to the soldiers because he wanted to save himself from the scouring he had never even heard of the name Nat Turner he just wanted to avoid the tortured anyway possible by saying he had information to Nat Turner.

1).Why do you think Linda is stressing the importance of literacy or lack of literacy?
Linda stresses the point of literacy because although she wishes she had a better education vocabulary and writing skills. To Linda literacy was very important to her and she just wishes that she had been better at it. She also points out that the even some of the white people weren't capable to read or write. It shows how slaves had hard labor but somehow had the time to learn how to speak, write and read in english.
